SWOT analysis of India as a hot investment destination for the top wedding brands:

Wedding Industry statistics:

Estimated Industry size: US$ 30 billion

Growth rate: 20% per year

Budget range of planned weddings: US$ 20,000 to US$ 4 million

Premium on destination wedding: 30% to 40%

Strength & Opportunity:

1.      Growing purchasing power and willingness to spend.

2.      Rising consumer aspirations.

3.      Growing influence of Punjabi customs of mehendi  and music.

4.      The expansion of customized designer outfits, accessories and jewellary as big ramp designers open boutiques on high street.

5.      A mushrooming of beauty salons that offer professional make-up finishes at varying price point- with special deals thrown in.

6.      Comfort factor for hosts who can out-source wedding organization to professionals.

Weaknesses and Threats:

1.      Government regulation and policies in regard to FDI investment.

2.      Critical cultural knowledge is required as India has a great range of diversified culture and customs.

3.      Indigenous event management players has access to the details of wedding customs and rituals that can put them to advantageous position in getting leads of the clients.

4.       Entry of the well known brand would threaten the Indigenous wedding planning companies to lower their consultancy and service charge.

Some of the international brands are coming up with the limited edition products that connect with the ethnicity of the Indian. The classic example of it is Genesis Luxury, the Marketing and Distribution Company for many international luxury labels in India.

Tailor your weddings:

Customizing your wedding through Event Management Company, are no longer the sole privileges of super rich. More consumers are hiring event planners and designers to tailor-made the occasion to suit varied pockets.

“The wedding market was no where ten year back, and then it arrived for the richest. Today it is for everyone ready to spend little extra”- by an executive partner from an Event management company. He continued “Recently one of the client spent US $ 80,000 for her weddings that was organized and managed by us”. Well to compare typical Indian weddings in the US cost three times the average American ceremony. This is the reason why global salon brands are looking ways to enter the rich Indian market. While interviewing another US based NRI invited 300 people and spent US$ 90,000 for “a well managed and stress free wedding”. He added that thanks to the planners, he and his wife did not miss out the fun and celebrations. The estimated US $ 30 billion Indian wedding industry is growing at 20% annually and the new figure is expected to come in the near future. Such figure can be assumed to be a honey trap for top wedding brands in providing wedding services in the potentially huge wedding market like India. To read the potential of the Indian wedding market read my next blog on: SWOT analysis of India as a hot investment destination for the top wedding brands.
These Wedding planners offer one stop solutions that includes venue selection and design, dress and jewellary design and selection, florist services, catering, entertainment troupes and designed program, make-up services, gifting and guest management services. The role of the wedding planners can range from selecting a perfect venue for wedding and finding the right kind of catering services that can cater to the needs of customary foods and drinking habits in a particular region. Apart from right selection of venue and catering services the events planners are also consulted for invitation card designing and getting the type and style of return gifts. With so many regions and so many cultures to follow the biggest challenge for the event planner is to create a delicate balance of all rituals observed in a particular culture and also not losing sight of the glamour factors. In some cases it is totally left to the creativity and skills of the event planner so as to how they can make the whole wedding events memorable.
Destination weddings, though they cost 30%-40% more, are hot. Wedding outfits, accessories and make-up services are also seeing a huge amount of personalized choice and couture businesses are growing at rate of 20% as more and more consumers are not averse to experimenting. Today, it is not just about brides and grooms anymore but the trend has shifted to friends and family who comes for the occasion for that perfect look.

Fashion tricks for shorter grooms on the wedding day:

Create vertical lines: The key is to create an optical illusion of height using vertical lines. Pin stripes and thin corduroys will definitely help because they give an impression of added height. You can also try shirts with spread or pointy collars.
Go monotone: If a short build groom is clad in the same or similar colour from top to bottom, the eye automatically sees a longer vertical length. A suit is ideal clothing for the short build groom, as it gives the impression of added height. Blending shoe, socks and trouser colour is another good trick. Even while wearing Jeans try not to wear tops and bottom that differ too much in colour or shades.
Slim down silhouette: It is vital for a short groom to wear clothes that are well fitted, for example: slim pants are a must.

Lengthen the upper part of your clothing: Suits and blazers should always fall below the buttocks of the groom. This gives the impression of added inches to the height. Show more cuffs from under your suit, this lengthens their arms.

Bridal makeup tricks this summer:

Bridal makeup tricks this summer:

Avoid Concealer: Colour of the skin tone changes during summer and hence looks patchy, so the best option is to sparingly use concealer, but if you have to use it, blend it well. The other option is to use light translucent powder as it can become cakey.

Powder power: For long lasting make-up, apply pressed powder to your eye-lids to soak up any additional oil before applying the eye shadow. This will also help set the powder and prevent creasing. Also, instead of powdering the rising oil from surface of the skin, use tissue paper or bloating paper to absorb dirt, oil and sweat as it won’t make the skin cakey.

Eye wise: Use eye lash curler before applying mascara to open up the eyes. Also, use waterproof mascara to prevent from black eye syndrome. You can also combine a lighter crème eye-shadow with light lipstick or lip gloss and you can have instant bright eyes.

Lipliner comes first: Outline the lips with the lipliner in order to prevent smudging and bleeding of lip colour and only then apply lip colour. Apply lip gloss or shimmer powder on the centre of the lower lips and upper lips to add volume, fullness and dimension. Exfoliate your lips once or twice in a week or run your tooth brush to remove dead skin.

Go bright: Choose juicy pinks, orange shades and yummy reds as they are shades of summer. Bright colours look good on single toned complexion and clear skin.

Tips to care for the bridal jewellary

Seek professional help:
All the precious metals are prone to scratch. It’s good to get your jewellary polished regularly if the brides want to maintain its high shine. The option can be finding jeweller trained bench professional for all adjustments, resizing, polishing and cleaning.
Regular cleaning:
Brides can help themselves in cleaning their jewellary by using a mild solution of soap and warm water and gently rub it with a soft cloth; the other option can be finding a cleaning solution.
Avoid wear and tear:
It’s important to remove jewellary when engaged in any kind of manual activities. Avoid placing your Jewellary where other pieces of jewellary end up scratching. Store your pieces either in separate jewellary box or a soft cloth bag.
Keep away from chlorinated water:
Swimming pool water, when lightly chlorinated, shouldn’t be a problem with high quality jewellary, particularly platinum. It is highly advisable to stay away, as when concentrated and exposed to silver or gold jewellary it may begin to have corrosion effect especially when you add the temperature in chlorinated hot tubs.

Keep moisture away:
Water left on jewellary might leave stains. Drying them with a clean cloth after contact will be helpful. If stains remain, applying a small amount of alcohol should remove them. It is advisable not to handle bleach or harsh chemicals when wearing your jewellary.

Taking care of bridal diamond jewellary:
Careful cleaning:
We all are aware that diamond is one of the hardest known natural mineral but when it is set in the form of jewellary it is highly vulnerable to cracking, breakage or spoiling. Hence care should be taken while cleaning them. The best option is to use soft brush, soap and water or you can use an eye brow or even a lipstick brush.
Mild wash:
Before you start cleaning it is advisable to make a mix of warm water and a mild detergent. Then place your diamond jewellary in it. Always use mild cleanser to clean your diamond. Jewellary stores use diluted ammonia to clean with. The easiest way for you to replicate this at home is by using Windex mixed with hot water. The heat in the water will loosen up any oils on the stone.
 Scrub gently:
Soak it for a few minutes and then scrub with the brush. An old tooth brush works best. While giving a rinse to the diamond Jewellary you can use a strainer.

Cultural sensitivity: The need of the hour for the Event Management Company

Cultural sensitivity: The need of the hour for the Event Management Company

Managing individual customers is a common buzzword circumventing the cross-section of today’s industries. In order to serve the needs and requirement of individual customers or clients, companies are taking a step forward to serve and satisfy an individual needs through an effective approach to the whole concept of customer relationship management (CRM). Well, the logic behind the whole concept of customer relationship management lies in the fact that the organization really finds it expensive affairs to attract new customers and clients in their business net, then to retain the already existing customer base.

Telecom industries of today can be said to be the classic example of following the model of customer relationship management, and the similar route are being taken by hospitality industry and simultaneously being followed by the tourism sector. Serving individual customers can be a complex and tardy affairs but the benefits accrued can be immense and at times can provide synergetic effect to the overall benefits of an organization. This article focuses on the cultural aspects in dealing with the customer relationship management, the insensitivity to which could lead to a big blunder. This article would also give an insight to real life example of how an event management company can grow its strength by getting informed about the diverse culture and serving to their individual taste.

Student and faculty of Birmingham Trent University (name changed, to retain the reputation of the university), have had been a regular visitor to the Platinum Tree (name changed), a four star hotel, in Buxton. The purpose of the visit was to impart training to the new batch with professional skills that would improve their employability. An event management company was hired by the University that would organize and facilitate the training program to be delivered to the new batch of students from Birmingham Trent University. To mention about the demographics, the whole batch of students comprises of Indian, Pakistani, Srilankan, Chinese and the indigenous students from UK itself. The whole program was hectic and as per the schedule and students was really enjoying the whole trip of Buxton, but alas, the whole events took an ugly turn when some of the Pakistani and Srilankan guys who followed Muslim faith did not turn up for the get together party. All the rest started speculating the reason as to what has occured that has led to the awkwardness of faculty and the rest of the guys. In order to find out the real reason behind the whole Buxton issue, feedback forms were distributed back in the school. “Oh no” the issue was trivial, the whole drama started with the inclusion of “Ham” in the food menu and exclusion of “Halal chicken” (Ham & Non-halal foods are forbidden in their faith) and the University faculty didn’t enquired about it. Such was the pandemonium then after, that the next batch, protested before hand, and as a result of which the contract for the whole events were notified to the other events organizing company. Such incident could have been easily avoided had the previous organizer of events had done its homework and had they been sensitive to cultural issues.
In today’s era of globalization, it’s not surprising to see foreigner as a guest in someone marriage party or birthday party or any other such events. The event management companies can smartly delight these small groups or individuals by enquiring about their likes and dislikes.Take for instance; Government of Bihar (India) has been planning to revive the glory of one of the world’s oldest university i.e. Nalanda University. For this millions of dollars are being ushered as an aid from Japan, China, Taiwan and many other South-East Asian countries. The reason for such aid is cultural connection that these countries have with the old university. It is also the connection of Buddha teaching that has become the way of life in these countries and the old Nalanda University brings a personal connection to their age old tradition that turns them nostalgic. Recently China has sanctioned 1 million $ and has shown their interest in the building of Chinese style of Library and the similar demand, of their choice has been made by other south-east Asian countries. The point I want to raise here is that business of all type can raise enormous benefit from such personal connections especially when it comes to dealing with different culture and event management companies can be no exception in profiting the same. Globalization of today is now pressing on the industries to accept and respect each other culture and are evident in the working of today’s corporate culture.

Event organizers can be more creative and artistic in their approach to plan and organize multi-cultural events. For instance wedding party organized by the affluent Indian businessmen in a way can take care that the dinner menu prepared for the U.S and British guest get the option to choose for traditional English foods and best of the Indian cuisine. Similarly, Sheikh from middle-east countries is delighted when the invitation card encrypts Arabic script to invite them for an event. There can be similar other gestures that an event organizer can make, to create a positive enviornment for their organization.

Thus various examples has been put forward to explain how a positive environment can be build by being more cultural sensitive that are need of the hour with increasing globalization. Event management companies can build a reputation not only locally but globally as well, with their sheer display of cultural knowledge and its acknowledgement by their clients. Well, on the other hand cultural issues are delicate issue at the same time and can seriously damage the reputation as well if one does not have the deep insight into the whole knitty-gritty of a particular culture.

Insight into the contemporary Indian wedding: A Reflection

Wedding events has always been considered to be one of the most auspicious occasions in one’s life.  Such events are not only important for the couple going to tie a nuptial knot but also for the family, friends and relatives surrounding the brides and grooms. During these recent decade marriage events has experienced sea changes in how the event process has professionalized itself. The upcoming of event consultant and professionals has made it possible in bringing such change that has transformed the whole events to be more joyous and filled with fun.

I still remember that as a child I was exposed to both rural and urban marriages and the close distinction in the marriages that occurred in the diverse cultural group. It was during such exposure that I experienced the nostalgic folk songs of the rural India sung mostly by the elder women accompanied by the younger newlywed women. These songs still gives a fragrance memory of the traditional way the marriage process occurred. Now it’s been replaced by DJs or private party musicians and singer. Friends and relatives used to gather a month before the actual marriage. I observed elders planning and managing the whole events that has to be meticulously performed as it relates to their pride and giving utmost respect to the guest invited for such auspicious occasion.

Engagement ceremonies of today are performed with rings being exchanged between bride and groom irrespective of religion. But earlier this had the rituals performed by the priest. Engagement ceremony is being followed by Subh Tilak amongst the Hindus that are usually performed at the groom’s place of residence and in some cases community hall are booked.

Subh Tilak is actually a gift giving ceremony, in which the tradition of gifts, clothes, utensils and dowry (still evident) are being ushered to the groom and his family. Earlier the duration between the Subh Tilak and the actual marriage day used to be a more than a week or two. But with the changing times it’s been shortened to three to four days for the purpose of less known ceremony of Madwa and Mehndi rasam (ceremony). In the recent years due to the cultural acceptance and mingling in India, Baarat (when actual day of marriage), the modus operandi of Baarat events are almost same in all religions. Event management companies expertise and cultural knowledge in arranging these marriages tailor-made (due to the large cultural diversity), mixed with the cocktail of western touch has really helped the marriage events becoming memorable. Take for instance the marriage events of Liz Hurley and Arun Nair, the ceremony being performed in Jodhpur, India had drawn the global media attention that resulted in the beeline of celebrity marriage from US, UK in India.

Baarat events are considered to be the most important event of all the marriage events as on this day of events the actual marriage is to take place. Band parties are booked by the groom’s family three to four months before the actual day of marriage due to their busy schedule and to make it low cost affairs. During the last hour it is not necessary that one can engage reputed band party. Band party includes musician and the light man that makes the event colorful. Series of car and Bus accompany these Bandwala that accommodate family, friends and relatives of groom. Grooms car follows the rest of the car that are especially decorated with variety of beautiful flowers so that the people surrounding could establish the groom car. Baarat actually means the group of people of Groom acquaintances moves together towards the Brides place (community place could also be booked for the purpose).Family, friends and especially young lads of grooms acquaintances dance and fire cracker before the grooms convoy. Finally, after the Baarat reaches its destination, they are being welcomed by Bride relatives and their family member. This is followed by Jaymala ceremony.

Jaimala ceremony is a simple ceremony in which brides and groom garland each other that demonstrates that both of them accepts each other as to be a wife and husband that would eventually happens in few hours. It’s a symbolic ceremony that gives the opportunity to the bride family and her acquaintances’ to have the first glimpse of Grooms look in his new specially designed attire. Similar is the story from Grooms side to break the suspense of how beautiful the bride is. Nowadays usually Sherwani are being preferred by the Grooms especially designed for the marriage purpose. Brides wear saari for this special occasion, the trend is to wear Banarasi silk sari with silver linings and in the exceptional affluent case golden lining sari are preferred by the bride for wearing on this particular day. After the Jaymala ceremony is over all the guests are being invited for dinner party. The dinner menus are carefully prepared taking in view the cultural food habits and getting informed about their specific requirements. Finally, the marriage ceremony takes place being facilitated by the priest. Marriage ceremony is then followed by Reception party being thrown by the Grooms family.

Reception party is attended by the guest invited, that presents gift to the brides and grooms and bless them for their future prosperity. Nowadays DJs and private music band party has an eminent role in making such events memorable. Dinner party is thrown on this very day and Non-Vegetable items are included on the dinner menu. There is also a trend of serving alcohol in such reception party.
During the old days, the whole marriage events used to extend for a year and in some exceptional cases two or more years. It’s surprising, but till the recent times the practice has to undergo several phases of marriage rituals that includes ceremonies even after the actual marriage has occurred. All these were evident only in the arrange marriage as love marriage were a strict no-no during those times. Now with the advent of increasing educated population, social awareness and strict law enforcement, perception towards love marriage has changed. A love marriage nowadays translates into the arranged marriages so as to get social acceptance.
